Self-Drive Suggested Itinerary
Christchurch → Lake Tekapo → Mt. Cook Region → Dunedin → Te Anau → Milford Sound → Queenstown → West Coast Glacier → Punakaiki → Hanmer Springs → Kaikoura
Pick-up your car and drive to Lake Tekapo. Explore Glentunnel before the road climbs up to Mt. Hutt. Fishing, kayaking, bike riding, horse trekking and skiing are some of the things you can do at Lake Tekapo. Check out the Church of the Good Shepherd and the sheepdog statue.
Overnight: Mt. Cook Region
The road to Mt. Cook takes you through the beautiful Lake Pukaki. Try heli skiing, heli hiking and aerial sightseeing. Continue your journey to the city of Dunedin and visit penguin, albatross and seal colonies.
Visit Larnach Castle and Balclutha. After Gore, you’ll travel across the river plain to Lumsden and continue to Te Anau. From here, the delights of the Fiordland National Park are within easy reach. The Te Anau Caves are an excellent adventure.
Overnight: Te Anau
On the road to Milford, look for the Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain and the Mirror Lakes. Hop on a scenic Milford Sound Cruise and travel along the amazing 22 kilometre long fiord, dominated by Mitre Peak. Travel back to Queenstown via Mossburn and Lumsden for unique shopping opportunities or a farm tour.
Spend a day at leisure in Queenstown - activities include bungy jumping, jet boating, horse trekking, rafting and river surfing. Or take a journey to the iconic Bob’s Peak by a Gondola and enjoy award winning cuisine in the scenic restaurant, Kiwi Haka Maori culture performances and the Skyline Luge.
Lake Hawea is the first scenic highlight of your journey today, followed by the dramatic twists and turns of the Haast Pass. Enjoy waterfalls and river scenery as you arrive in Rainforest County. Next is pretty Lake Paringa and the unique Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.
Overnight: West Coast Glacier Region
Travel to Punakaiki, best known for its Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Hanmer Springs is a destination for relaxation and indulgence. You can soak in the hot springs or treat yourself to a range of spa therapies. Other Hanmer specialities include forest walks, horse trekking, trout fishing, jet boating, bungy jumping and golf.
Overnight: Hanmer Springs
Visit Kaikoura - one of the only places in the world where you can do a whale watch tour all year round.
In Christchurch, visit heritage sites, museums and art galleries, and enjoy the highly developed restaurant scene.
If time permits, visit the Antarctic Centre, which is only 5mins away from the airport.
